Winter in Timaru

20 Jul 2017 (Thu) - 31 Oct 2017 (Tue)

Take a break in Timaru this winter to enjoy our beach side city in Southern Canterbury. It gets pretty chilly down here in winter but that doesn't limit the events and activities we have available during the colder months. We have put together some of our favourite activities in the region during winter.
South Canterbury Museum
A Great indoor activity! This is all about the region’s heritage. They have specimens, artifacts, images and documents all collected and housed in a purpose built wing. Great exhibitions and educations programmes are available, so why not learn a little while you are visiting!

Aigantighe Art Gallery
This is a great friendly art museum for everyone. This is the South Island’s third largest public art gallery. They house works from the sixteenth century to the present day and they have a fantastic sculpture garden to check out. Definitely a memorable experience!
Caroline Bay Trust Aoraki Centre ( CBay)
This ones perfect for a family day out in the cold. Splash around all day in this hot indoor aquatic centre. They have a children’s area, hydrosildes, a café and if you like to pamper yourself there is a steam room, sauna and spa.

Timaru Botanic Gardens
This is worth a stroll even on the coldest days as this award winning garden is breath-taking. Take a wander through while you’re in the region and see for yourself.

Skiing in Timaru- This is a popular activity in Timaru during the winter. Two of our most popular ski fields are:
• Mount Dobson – A 40 minute drive from Timaru and owned and operated by a local family for the last 25 Years! This is NZ’s highest ski field. There are a great variety of slopes to suit all abilities. Great for skiing or snowboarding.
• Fox Peak – This one is only open on weekends but worth the visit. It is South Canterbury’s only non-profit ski field, operated by volunteers from the ski club. There is no equipment rentals so make sure you are geared up to go. They offer great rates for families, students and couples. Enjoy a great ski away from the crowds!

Ashley Motor Lodge is perfect for a winter getaway. Wake up to a beautiful cooked breakfast, then come home to a nice relaxing spa after a day of site seeing.

Your friendly hosts at Ashley Motor Lodge (Carl and Janet) are ‘in the know’ with the events and attractions in Timaru. They can make your next stay in Timaru enjoyable, whether it be for business, pleasure, or just passing through.

Dining Out In Timaru

Restaurants, Cafes and Pubs.

Being centrally located means that we are only a hop and a skip to some of Timaru's best bars, restaurants and cafes. Whether you're looking for fine dining, a quick bite, or a place party into the wee hours, Timaru has it all.

1. Cafes
The daily espresso has become such an ingrained part of Kiwi life that we almost take good coffee for granted. Some of our favourite places are the Purple Lizard Cafe and Coffee Culture, both of which are lively little places with a good selection of food, great coffee, and friendly service. If you are looking for free WiFi with your mocha, Sopheze Coffee Lounge & Catering Restaurant also has a top notch food selection and is popular with the locals. You can find all three of these cafes in Stafford Street.

2. Restaurants
Looking for something more substantial on an evening out? The Oxford Restaurant is rated as the #1 restaurant in Timaru. The meals are large and priced well, and the menu changes from time to time. We also recommend Zest Restaurant, where the meals have a spectacular reputation, the ambiance great, and the service exceptional. Booking ahead is recommended as this is a popular place. Both these restaurants are located on Stafford Street.

3. Pubs
The Speights Ale House in George Street is one of those pubs that straddles the two worlds of pub and restaurant successfully. Located just out of town, it's a bit further to travel but has plenty of TVs for your sports watching pleasure. If you're looking for something closer to town that will serve you your favourite cocktail, try the Petite Wine & Dine in Royal Arcade, just off Stafford Street. A classy stop, with live music and knowledgeable bartenders that know what they're doing.

Your friendly hosts at Ashley Motor Lodge (Carl and Janet) have all the inside knowledge on how to make your next stay in Timaru enjoyable, whether it be for business, pleasure, or just passing through.

Things to do In Timaru - Biking Holidays

Timaru is located in the beautiful South Canterbury is in the Central South Island region. It enjoys a diverse range of cycling routes through coastal tracks, river bank trails and local roads. So if you are wondering what things to do in Timaru,  consider our fast and furious mountain bike trails or our gentle, low impact trails for beginners and family groups. There's always something to guarantee a memorable experience for everyone.  Our weekends guest often use Ashley Motor lodge as a central base to enjoy regional bike trail options, and the great local activities. Here are a few to consider:

Centenial Park - Timaru's main mountain biking area is Centennial Park, a popular spot for the South Canterbury Mountain Bike Club. ( Locals call it 'The Scenic').  The area is popular with walkers and  mountain bikers. It is a lovely park in a small valley, with a mixture of native bush, pines, gums, oaks, and other exotic trees. A small lake and carpark lies at its heart, and a stream runs through the middle. It was quarried for rocks for harbour works in both the 19th and 20th centuries. The local mountain bike club has built and maintains a number of trails that can be ridden together in a variety of different ways.. Some of the tracks must be linked up by using the walking tracks (shared use) that also run through the park.

Alps to Ocean - Experience an unspoilt paradise where people come from all over the world to enjoy stunning, wide open spaces and untouched landscapes.  For over 300 km visitors can experience some of the most beautiful scenery New Zealand has to offer. Suitable for all ages, the trail is an easy grade, and offers a pleasing mix of on and off-road trails which link the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean.

St James Cycle Trail - The 64km trail offers a mix of riding grades through stunning and diverse scenery including soaring mountain peaks, crystal clear rivers, high-country lakes, alpine meadows, sub-alpine beech forest and expansive grassy river flats. In spring the alpine meadows are in full bloom, while from summer through to mid-autumn riders can experience rich contrasting colours on long evenings, with the chance to see the famous St James wild horses.

For cyclists, there’s a huge range of opportunities for world class biking. While this blog covers mountain bike options, we will review some great road bike options in out next "Things to do in Timaru" news item. Join us and see why we believe Canterbury is one of the South Island's best cycling destinations! If you’re interested in learning more about our local walking and biking options, or general things to do in and around Timaru, then give  your friendly hosts Carl and Janet Mathewson at Ashley Motor Lodge  a call, they are always happy to help!
