Mother’s Day fun Run
Raising awareness for Heart disease, this is a terrific way start to the day. A 5-km run or leisurely stroll on Mother’s Day, starting at the Caroline Bay Soundshell. All participants receive a Dick Frizzell designed T- Shirt. See the link for ticket information.

Head Like a hole – 25th Anniversary Tour
It’s been 25 years since Head Like a Hole’s debut album was released and they are celebrating with an extensive 12 date national tour that is coming to Timaru this May. Originating from Wellington in 1990, they were quickly signed and became New Zealand’s favorite rock n roll band. Re-live all their headbanging favorites in this fantastic show.

Urzila Carlson – Studies have Shown…
This is Urzila’s first ever national tour in New Zealand and is bound to be a fantastic show. Learning something new every time you hear the phrase “Studies have Shown” is how Urzila will have your sides splitting with laughter. Born in South Africa, Urzila has become a familiar face on NZ television. She is an award-winning Stand Up comedian and this show will be well worth checking out. See here for more info.

Sue Nicholson – Answers from the Other Side
She is known for her role in 'Sensing Murder' and she is bringing her incredible gift to Timaru. Creating a communication link between those in the living world and the spirit world, Sue manages to interact in a compassionate and uplifting style. She is able to deliver messages to the audience members from loved ones and has a truly incredible gift. A show not to be missed! Here is more information.

One Night with Queen
Familiarise yourself with those great hits such as Want to Break Free, A Kind of Magic and of course Bohemian Rhapsody. Garry Mullon won Star’s in their Eyes in 2000 and he has been touring ever since. Recreating the look and sound of the iconic rock band Queen, has resulted in a spectacular live concert that is coming to Timaru. Check out the website here for more info.

Winter Activities in Timaru

The word “snow” brings up images of skiing and Timaru is a convenient base for skiers. Within two hour’s drive there are numerous ski fields for snowboarding or skiing.

Fox Peak is only a 1.5 hour drive from Timaru. This field offers 500 ha of glorious snow terrain and 580 m vertical. Lovely beginner’s area and easy runs. Great access to backcountry.

Mount Dobson’s season typically begins in late June. It has a well-established ski school and is less than an hour’s drive from our warm and comfortable studios, one-bedroom or two bedroom units.

Relax in a spa bath after a challenging day on the slopes, and wake up to a beautiful cooked breakfast before you hit a different ski fields the next day. Or spend a day exploring all the wonderful things Timaru has to offer

Dining Out In Timaru

Being centrally located means that we are only a hop and a skip to some of Timaru's best bars, restaurants and cafes. Whether you're looking for fine dining, a quick bite, or a place party into the wee hours, Timaru has it all.

1. Cafes
The daily espresso has become such an ingrained part of Kiwi life that we almost take good coffee for granted. Some of our favourite places are the Purple Lizard Cafe and Coffee Culture, both of which are lively little places with a good selection of food, great coffee, and friendly service. If you are looking for free WiFi with your mocha, Sopheze Coffee Lounge & Catering Restaurant also has a top notch food selection and is popular with the locals. You can find all three of these cafes in Stafford Street.

2. Restaurants
Looking for something more substantial on an evening out? The Oxford Restaurant is rated as the #1 restaurant in Timaru. The meals are large and priced well, and the menu changes from time to time. We also recommend Zest Restaurant, where the meals have a spectacular reputation, the ambiance great, and the service exceptional. Booking ahead is recommended as this is a popular place. Both these restaurants are located on Stafford Street.

3. Pubs
The Speights Ale House in George Street is one of those pubs that straddles the two worlds of pub and restaurant successfully. Located just out of town, it's a bit further to travel but has plenty of TVs for your sports watching pleasure. If you're looking for something closer to town that will serve you your favourite cocktail, try the Petite Wine & Dine in Royal Arcade, just off Stafford Street. A classy stop, with live music and knowledgeable bartenders that know what they're doing.

Things to do In Timaru - Biking Holidays

Timaru is located in the beautiful South Canterbury is in the Central South Island region. It enjoys a diverse range of cycling routes through coastal tracks, river bank trails and local roads. So if you are wondering what things to do in Timaru,  consider our fast and furious mountain bike trails or our gentle, low impact trails for beginners and family groups. There's always something to guarantee a memorable experience for everyone.  Our weekends guest often use Ashley Motor lodge as a central base to enjoy regional bike trail options, and the great local activities. Here are a few to consider: 


Centenial Park - Timaru's main mountain biking area is Centennial Park, a popular spot for the South Canterbury Mountain Bike Club. ( Locals call it 'The Scenic').  The area is popular with walkers and  mountain bikers. It is a lovely park in a small valley, with a mixture of native bush, pines, gums, oaks, and other exotic trees. A small lake and carpark lies at its heart, and a stream runs through the middle. It was quarried for rocks for harbour works in both the 19th and 20th centuries. The local mountain bike club has built and maintains a number of trails that can be ridden together in a variety of different ways.. Some of the tracks must be linked up by using the walking tracks (shared use) that also run through the park. 


Alps to Ocean - Experience an unspoilt paradise where people come from all over the world to enjoy stunning, wide open spaces and untouched landscapes.  For over 300 km visitors can experience some of the most beautiful scenery New Zealand has to offer. Suitable for all ages, the trail is an easy grade, and offers a pleasing mix of on and off-road trails which link the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean.


St James Cycle Trail - The 64km trail offers a mix of riding grades through stunning and diverse scenery including soaring mountain peaks, crystal clear rivers, high-country lakes, alpine meadows, sub-alpine beech forest and expansive grassy river flats. In spring the alpine meadows are in full bloom, while from summer through to mid-autumn riders can experience rich contrasting colours on long evenings, with the chance to see the famous St James wild horses.
